I had this same problem. Virus led to repair which led to broken activation. I reinstalled IE8 in Safe Mode and now activation works. I didn't try and command line code listed above, but I imagine it works too.

ALRIGHT i dont remember where i found this i think the key is hidden somewhere in this thread or one like it on this same site, but the problem is the wga relies on IE, when u do a repair install on a sys with IE8 it down grades it to ie6, this action actualy breaks IE all together, what you need to do is boot into safe mode with command prompt run explorer copy the ie 8 installer from your flashdrive to the desktop run the installer.
