Windows 8 is also throwing an error message when I install Mailwasher Pro definitely not software causing the problem as the problem exists before trying to install Mailwasher. I do not know if the following will help in identifying the cause and possible resolution of this problem:. If I use shell:AppsFolder and inspect the various apps, ALL the problem apps have no associated image icon just the default icon image. Attempting to add an icon to the appropriate shortcut e. AppexMaps does not achieve anything so the problem is somehow with the way the apps themselves are installed or their registry entries. I upgraded from Windows 7 using the on-line upgrade.
However the 'Metro' screen is just about unusable as none of the 'standard' tiles have any identification. All others such as Camera, IE, Mail etc are unidentified I am reluctant to do an Upgrade re-installation as I do not know if this will cause me to lose my installed Win7 programs. Despite a fairly good search of the Internet I can find no way of repairing these missing icons.

Just to show how user-unfriendly it looks and feels, here's my start screen:. Ok, I posted an actual fix. It is rather long but addresses the problem itself. The information came from somewhere else, and I just adapted. It triggers a rebuild of the Start menu.
However, the Tiles layout will be gone and you will have to start from scratch. Here's a screen shot of that: Is there a way to restore it or anything?
